EMPLOYERS HAVE THE CAPABILITY OF TRANSFORMING LIVES
During his high school years, Azeem worked for two summers in a major Canadian Corporation. He was very apprehensive and wondered how he would be treated. Even though he was born in Canada his skin colour was different. He was already a member of a visible minority. However, he was also a member of another visible minority group, those with physical and mental disabilities.
Fortunately, the people with whom Azeem worked were very sensitive to his situation and treated him with patience and respect. They provided him with tasks which he was capable of completing successfully. Yes, it took him longer but they demonstrated empathy and allowed him to build his confidence. They focused on his abilities and strengths.
Azeem felt appreciated and this motivated him to do his best. He reciprocated by working hard and never missing a day of work.
In his Corporate presentations, Azeem reminds management about the power they have to transform the lives of those who are differently capable. He encourages them to look beyond the disabilities and differences of others. His views on diversity, inclusiveness, empathy and perseverance serve as strong reminders of the way establishments operate and what they can do to enhance and enrich the overall working environment.
